Introduction of Ethernet:
Definition: – Ethernet is the communication standard that is widely used in wired technology, ex – LAN. Where it helps to connect multiple devices are share their information etc.
Characteristics: –
• It is mostly used in LAN.
• It supports the data bandwidth 10 to 100 Gbps.
• In OSI model, the Physical layer is it called as Ethernet Technology but in Data Link layer is it called as Ethernet Protocol.
Evolution of Ethernet:
• Standard Ethernet: – Speed up to 10 Mbps.
• Fast Ethernet: – Speed up to 100 Mbps.
• Gigabit Ethernet: – Speed up to 1 Gbps.
• 10 Gigabit Ethernet: – 10 Gbps.
Types of Ethernet Cable: –
Basically, there are 3 types of Ethernet cable –
1) Straight Through Cable: –
A Straight-Through cable is used to connect different types of devices.
Example –
• Switch to Switch
• Switch to Router
• PC to IO Box
• IO Box to Patch Panel
2) Cross Over Cable: –
Cross Over cable is used to connect same types of devices.
Example –
• PC to PC
• Switch to Switch
• Hub to Hub
• Router to Router
• PC to Router
3) Roll Over Cable: –
The Roll Over cable is used to connect a Router or a Switch console port to the computer communication port (COM port).
It is used for Administrative purposes –
• Configuring the devices (Router, Switch).
• Password Breaking.
